The tragedy of immigrants from Africa and Middle East came to unspeakable ends last week; 400 of them drowned when the boat they were traveling from Libya capsized halfway. The figure is an addition to a series of fatal incidents that occurred so far this year, according to representatives of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the situation has killed 900 people[i]. With the economic decline, war, persecution, and unemployment situation of more than a dozen countries in Africa and the Middle East, increased northward migration has baffled European authorities, struggling to articulate a coherent policy against human trafficking.
Italy has taken the worst part of this migratory wave, which this week acquired a worrying aspect, as survivors of one of the boats reported that Muslim immigrants pushed overboard 12 fellow Libyans for being Christians[ii]. Experts say these facts, besides representing a clear humanitarian crisis, are an opportunity for jihadism in this part of the world to sneak into Europe, worsening security situations and Islamophobia remaining in the Old Continent.
This tragedy exposes the immigration situation worldwide and the lack of opportunities of citizens. Immigration destabilize the global economy and threatens society. How are we acting against immigration? Where is the control and security for citizens?
With this article I want open the debate to discuss immigration and emphasize it as a global crisis.
